My Teaching Philosophy:         superman emblem.gif

I support a constructivist approach to education because I believe that it is accountable and can be effectively applied in the classroom and beyond.  The philosophy of constructivism, which was founded by John Dewey, is that learning occurs with children when they are able to connect and tie new information given to them, to previously gained understanding from their own individual experiences.  However, my philosophy goes beyond simply believing in this statement.  The reality is that all children don’t have exactly the same experiences and some children have more experience than others.  Therefore, I feel that it is our job, as educators, to provide our students with as many experiences as we possibly can, which can be incorporated into the curriculum and expectations of learning that we are required to meet. We have got to look at the material in the textbooks that we are required to teach and research as many different ways that the knowledge can be practically used in every day life.  If we ourselves don’t know how to use the knowledge that we are teaching and are unsure as to exactly how it is valuable, than how can we expect our students to value it and remember how to do something that they’ve been taught when they actually need to in life.  Field trips, for example, are a great way for students to experience new things and gain knowledge from it.  I have embraced the opportunity to provide students with these experiences by planning various memorable trips.  In the past, my classes have travelled to the theatre, museums, and harbour front by boat in Toronto and also North in our own Board to Bracebridge at Santa's Village.  I always attempt to maximize the experience by providing the most comfortable and convenient means of transportation for both the students and parent volunteers attending the trip.  Making sure the trip is fun as well as educational is also paramount.

We as teachers have to remember and never lose sight of what it was like to be a child, experiencing new things for the very first time.  We can’t always just give children the right answers or tell them all the steps to get there.  We have to let children go through their own natural process of learning, letting them make their own mistakes along the way, in order for them to discover the right answers for themselves.  It is only by this, that they will truly understand and be able to apply the knowledge that they gain.  We must understand the way that children think and learn.

A teacher’s job is to act as a guide in the learning process and not to judge the student, but to help them to understand.  Our job is to not only provide students with experience, but to have them experience learning so that it is both valuable and useful to them and they will be able to apply the things that they learn.  I feel that this is the way to be an effective and successful teacher--one that will have a significant and important impact on the students that I teach.

This is the philosophy that inspires me and guides me in my profession on a daily basis.  I'm grateful for the opportunity to share it with you!
