Welcome to Central Senior School!
Class 71
Dear Parents,
I am excited to be working with your child this year, and look forward to the many activities that we will share. This year, we will be working on building on our existing skills, as well as branching out into new areas.
In Writing, I will be looking to see that your child:
- Uses correct spelling and grammar in all writing, and is able to recognize mistakes and use appropriate resources (dictionary, thesaurus) for corrections.
- Is able to answer questions with enough detail to fully explain his/her opinion, research, topic, or issue.
- Makes connections with prior experience or knowledge such that all writing is explicit and easy to understand.
- Uses language appropriate for the audience and the purpose of writing.
In Reading, I will be looking to see that your child:
- First and foremost, learns to choose books that are interesting and fun to read. (During Silent Reading each day, I will not limit his/her choice. Instead, I will ask that they read for enjoyment. )
- Is able to read a variety of both fiction and non-fiction materials.
- Is able to critically analyze the text, regardless of the genre, and form opinions based on prior knowledge and experience.
- Make connections to the text; from other texts, from other media forms, from other experiences and from his/her self.
In Oral Language, I will be looking to see that your child:
- Develops the ability to speak to the class fluently and maintain the interest of the audience, through rehearsal and revision practices.
- Is able to make connections to other materials to support his/her information.
- Is able to present information with and without the use of props or visual aids, as appropriate.
- Is able to ask questions and participate in class and group discussions, to contribute to understanding for his/her self and others.
Weekly Work:
- We will have a spelling pre-test each Monday, which will not be marked by me. This is for your child to be able to identify which words they need to concentrate on before the test on Friday. Spelling work is to be done on his/her own time and will be handed in on Friday prior to the test.
- Each cycle (6 days), your child is responsible for writing at least once in their reading log. Reading logs will not go home; writing should be done during Silent Reading time.
- We will be starting Literacy Stations very shortly, so that your child is able to independently practice the skills that are being taught in class. Therefore, it will be important this year for all students to use their time effectively in class. If work is not being completed, this may be sent home so that your child does not fall behind in class. I will not, however, be assigning any as homework.
Communication:
I strongly believe that parents and teachers form a team dedicated to each student’s success, and encourage you to contact me throughout the year if you have any questions or concerns. You can send me a note or write in the agenda that has been provided to each student. If you believe the issue requires discussion, please feel free to call me at the school and leave a message. I will return your call promptly. In addition, my email address is k.nelles@tldsb.on.ca. I will be using the class webpage to post any information that applies to all
students, but will call home for individual concerns.
Besides working on academic growth, we will be focusing together on cooperative and social skills. Respect and support will be a key to our class this year as we learn how we can make a difference in the world. I look forward to a great year with your child!
Sincerely,
kristin nelles
