                Thinking: Literacy Work Station Task
                Science – Inquiry

                Goal Setting

Text: Nelson Literacy Tech Then And Now 8a “Paving from Plastic” pg 59-61

Task: Complete the following flow chart outlining Gina’s goals and achievements.

Her Idea:

Step One:

Reflection:

Based on the information given in the text, both explicitly and implicitly, what characteristics does Gina possess?
How do these characteristics help her reach the goals she sets for herself?

How could the goals that Gina is setting for herself make positive changes in her community?  How far could she
go with these goals?

Gina accomplished an awful lot by the age of 16.  Based on what you know, or can infer, about Gina, what do you
think she will do with the rest of her life? What goals will she set for herself?  What do you think she will accomplish?

                        Thinking: Literacy Work Station Task
                        Geography – Economic Systems
Health – Healthy Living & Good Choices

                        Responsibility (in advertising)

Text: Nelson Literacy Reality Check 8c “Advertising in Disguise”

Task: Complete the following mind map outlining the examples of “stealth” advertising from the text.

“Stealth Advertising”

Why / How do these
techniques work?

Reflection:

Explain your view on whether product placement should be banned from movies and TV shows?   Who would object to such
a law and should they get a say? Why or why not?

Advertising within the classroom is currently not “advised”.  If it meant more advanced resources for schools and classrooms
(such as textbooks, computers, technology, etc), should product placement and advertising be allowed in our school system?
Weigh both the pros and cons before stating your opinion.

Famous author, H.G. Wells wrote that “Advertising is legalized lying.”  Respond to this quote with connections to the text.

How does Canada’s treatment of women compare to that of other countries around the world?
