Helpful Reminders

Please keep lunches and snacks nut free.
Please send healthy snacks. Watch for imposters with various sugars in the
first few ingredients. They increase unfocused energy and make learning
difficult.

Please send a complete change of clothes to leave at school.

We have gym everyday so please send running shoes so your child can
participate.

Please send indoor shoes your child can do up.

Please keep home toys at home. We cannot be responsible for the
whereabouts or handling care of home toys.

Library is every day 1. Children will only be allowed to borrow a new book
when the old one is returned.

Recess: Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather
so that he/she will not be in any discomfort while enjoying the fresh air.

It is very helpful if you label all of your child’s belongings. This would include such things as backpacks, lunch bags, containers, shoes, and
coats. Fun labeling website: www.mabel.ca

Homework Reminders

Poem books: Our class will learn a new poem or song each week. This piece of literature will reinforce many concepts we are learning such as rhythm, magic words, syllables etc. Students will become familiar with the poem or song and start to feel “like readers”.  Poem books will go home at the end of each week. Please allow your child
to share the poem with you and ensure that the activity is completed and the poem book is returned each Monday.

Sound Books will continue to go home daily .Please allow your child to read their sound book to you nightly. Students will receive a sticker every time they can remember the letter sound. Pages with little or no stickers allow us to identify sounds your child is still struggling with.

Borrow A Book Program
All of our SK students are involoved with the Borrow a Book Program. JK students will be intorduced to the program gradually and when they are ready.

Students will choose a leveled book of their choice to bring home. They will write the title of the book on the back of their envelope and then
read the book to an adult that night. Once the book has been read I would appreciate if the adult sign the back of the agenda letting us know they are ready for a new book. The students then bring the book back to school and sign out a new book to take home. Please feel free to keep a book an extra night if it seems a little tricky or your child would like to read it again. We want reading to be a positive experience so please help make this time fun and not a chore. ( see helpful reading tips for ideas)

Word Boxes
Word boxes are another way we can help our children learn to read. These boxes come from the Jolly Ponics Program and help teach students how to sound out phonetic words. The aim here is to develop the skill of actually working out words, rather than developing visual memory. We will try to alternate word boxes and books to keep it interesting. Students will try to sound out these words using their sounds letter by letter. e.g., s-a-t, s-a-t until they can hear the word sat. It is helpful to say the first sound and whisper the next sounds. This can be a difficult process and is
not supposed to be frustrating. Sometimes these words are easier to hear if you modle the process and they can listen to your sounds. Eventually
your child will be able to hear the words on their own but it may take a little practice.

Games
Occasional we will send home a game that you could play with your child to
reinforce different learning goals we are working on at school. Please play the game and send it back to school when you are done. Remember to
have fun!!.

All of these ideas should take no more than 10 minutes to complete. Please try to create a special time to complete these activities with your child.  This is just another way we can create a fun, positive learning environement. Learning at this age is supposed to be fun at no time do we
want to make this a chore.
